Best Brands for Big and Tall Jackets
Plenty of outdoor brands sell a few big sizes. Far fewer design their jackets for big and tall men. The difference shows up the first time you reach overhead, sit down in a car or zip the jacket over a sweater. Before you pick a brand, here is what separates a jacket made for your frame from a straight size that has simply been made wider.
What the best big and tall jacket brands get right
- A real size range. Many brands stop at 3XL or 4XL, or only carry the biggest sizes in one or two colors. Look for a full run to 7XL in every color.
- True tall sizes. Tall should mean longer sleeves and a longer body, not the same jacket in a bigger chest.
- Proportion, not just width. Armholes, shoulders and hood openings should grow with the size, so the jacket moves with you instead of pulling across the back.
- Honest weather ratings. A stated waterproof rating, taped seams and a clear description of the insulation tell you what the jacket will actually do in the rain and cold.
- Easy returns. Sizing varies from brand to brand. A brand that makes exchanges easy lets you get the fit right without guessing.
