Choosing the Perfect Big and Tall Winter Coat

Finding a winter coat as a big and tall man usually means settling: a coat that closes but pulls across the shoulders, sleeves that stop short of the wrist, or a hem that rides up the moment you reach for something. The right big and tall winter coat fixes all three, and it keeps you warm on the days you actually need it. Here is how to choose one.

Start with how cold it gets where you live

Match the coat to your winter, not to the thermometer on the worst day of the year. If you see a few cold snaps and a lot of wet, 35 degree days, a waterproof shell with a warm liner you can take out will serve you better than a heavy parka. If you shovel snow and wait at bus stops in single digits, you want real insulation, a hood that closes around your face and a hem that covers past your waist.

Fit matters more than the size on the tag

A big and tall coat should be cut for a bigger frame, not a straight size stretched wider. Check three things when you try one on:

  • Shoulders and chest: you should be able to cross your arms and reach forward without the back pulling tight.
  • Sleeve length: with your arms out in front of you, the cuff should still reach your wrist.
  • Body length: the hem should cover your waistband when you bend. If you are tall, look for a coat that comes in true tall sizes, not just a bigger chest.

Look for the details that keep weather out

A waterproof rating and taped seams keep wet snow from soaking through. A snowskirt at the waist and inner wrist gaiters stop snow getting in when you sit, kneel or reach. Pit zips let you cool down on the walk up the hill instead of sweating inside your coat. An insulated, adjustable hood matters more than most people expect.
